Piedmont, a city of about two square miles is completely surrounded by the City of Oakland. This residential community is home to just 11,000 residents. Piedmont began as a resort in the 1870s. Piedmont Park and Blair Park, offering natural springs, a hotel, and refined amusements, attracted wealthy pleasure seekers arriving by streetcar (and, later, cable car). In the 1890s, development of large estates increased and, by 1907, there was enough of a population to incorporate as a city.
Located just 20 minutes accross the Bay from San Francisco, Piedmont is recognized for its fine architecture and beautiful tree-lined streets. It is regarded as one of the most desirable communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Residents are primarily professionals and business executives who are attracted to this community because of its excellent schools, responsive police and fire departments, prime location and ideal climate.
Most homes in Piedmont were built during the 1920s, with unique and monumental homes of period revival style, as well as grand versions of the Craftsman bungalow and other homes designed by virtuoso architects. The city of Piedmont has but one small retail center, however shopping is plentiful in adjacent Oakland neighborhoods of Piedmont Avenue, Montclair, Grand Lake and Rockridge.
Students are served by the excellent schools of the Piedmont Unified School District, comprised of three elementary schools, one middle school, two high schools and one adult school. According to the district's mission statement, the district is committed to public education, is dedicated to developing independent learners who are responsible, competent, collaborative, compassionate, and intellectually curious with a strong sense of self and community. Parent commitment to excellence in education is strong, and their participation in the schools is extensive. Residents of Piedmont have supported a parcel tax enabling the schools to offer small class sizes, full counseling services and an expansive extra-curricular programs.
